Giving to The Norman Howard School

As an independent school, The Norman Howard School relies on tuition, fees and the charitable gifts of our many friends to develop, implement, evaluate and enhance the many wonderful programs that make The Norman Howard School the unique and special place that it is.

A school is more than a building. It is a community. Our community of donors believes in The Norman Howard School and invests in our student’s futures. Donors can support:
NHS Annual Campaign – supports everyday operations at NHS
NHS Special Projects – designate your gift to a specific program or project at NHS
NHS Scholarship Campaign
NHS Endowment Campaign
In-Kind Gifts – donations of supplies or other equipment

Donors can make immediate gifts of cash, stock, or equipment or make planned gifts of charitable trusts, life insurance or through a bequest/will. Gifts can be made in memory of or in honor of someone. All gifts are tax-deductible.
It is because of our donors that we can enhance our program and meet the needs of our students with learning disabilities. Every gift makes a difference. Please contact Lisa Record, Vice President of Development and Marketing to discuss our program and how you can help. Lisa can be reached at 585-266-7277, ext. 214 or lrecord@e2ny.org.

Gifts of Stock:
Making a gift of stock allows you to avoid paying capital gains taxes on the increase in the value of your stock while at the same time you receive a tax deduction for the full value of the stock on the date of your gift. Please talk to your tax advisor for precise details. If you are interested in making a gift of stock to The Norman Howard School, please contact Lisa Record at 585-266-7277, ext. 214 or lrecord@e2ny.org

Gifts of Life Insurance:
By naming The Norman Howard School as the owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy you no longer need, you can take a tax deduction of the cash value of the policy at the time of the gift (for insurance policies with a cash value). If your policy still requires annual premium payments and you continue to make the payment – your payment becomes a tax-deductible gift also. Please talk to your insurance agent for complete details.

Bequests
Please remember The Norman Howard School when you are making your estate plans. Your attorney can assist you in making a legacy for the future at NHS. Please notify our Development Office if you do name The Norman Howard School in your will so that we can recognize you as a member of The Hoskin Society. The Hoskin Society consists of people who recognize the value of a Norman Howard School education and the impact that it has on youngsters with learning disabilities and have named The Norman Howard School in their estate plans. Many times we discover that someone has named NHS in their will only after the donor has died, at which time we cannot express our gratitude and appreciation.

Here is sample language to use in your will:
I hereby bequeath (list a specific dollar amount or include a percentage of your estate) to The Norman Howard School in Rochester, NY for (you may list a specific fund or purpose for your gift or make an unrestricted gift.)

Life Income Gifts
You can create a charitable remainder trust or a charitable gift annuity. With a major gift of this type you and/or another beneficiary receive annual income from the trust (which varies based on the type of trust you create and the trust’s performance). The amount of your gift to establish the trust would be tax deductible the date the trust was created. The Norman Howard School would receive the remainder of the trust upon the death of all beneficiaries. Please speak to your attorney and tax advisor about the tax benefits of making a life income gift.

Information about Funds and Campaigns at NHS.

The NHS Annual Campaign
Tuition and fees only cover a portion of the expenses incurred to educate each child at The Norman Howard School. We spend on average, nearly $2,000 more per child than we receive. Funds are also needed for our faculty development program, curriculum enhancement and other program improvements. Donations to the Annual Campaign are critical to the operation of the school.

The NHS Scholarship Campaign
Nearly all of the families who apply to The Norman Howard School for private placement demonstrate a need for financial assistance. Donations to the NHS Scholarship Fund support scholarships to students who might otherwise not be able to attend NHS.

The NHS Endowment Campaign
Donations to the NHS Endowment Fund demonstrate a donor’s firm belief in the value of a Norman Howard School education. Gifts to the Endowment Fund are invested to provide income for future program development.

Special Projects and Restricted Donations
Sometimes a donor makes a gift for a specific purpose – science equipment, computer technology or field trips are just some examples. The Norman Howard School maintains a funding wish list for some items that we wish we had funding for. Options range from $100 wishes to larger “big star” wishes. Some donors have their own ideas about projects they are interested in funding. Discuss your ideas with Lisa Record, Vice President of Development and Marketing at 585-266-7277, ext. 214 or lrecord@e2ny.org.

In-kind Gifts
Sometimes donors have items to donate that would be useful at The Norman Howard School such as books for the library, office furniture or classroom supplies. If you or your business are interested in making an in-kind donation, please contact Lisa Record, Vice President of Development and Marketing to discuss your gift. Lisa can be reached at 585-266-7277, ext. 214 or lrecord@e2ny.org.
