Kids deserve people who understand what is different about the ways we learn

Hardworking, caring, and athletic is how people describe me, but before Norman Howard, I was confused in school and my mom worried about the influence of others on me. There were 30 kids in my classes, lessons went by so fast I couldn’t ask questions, and teachers couldn’t help. If you didn’t understand something, you got left behind.
By 7th grade, I was really struggling - ELA was the hardest - and I felt like I’d never catch up. My mom searched for a place where I could feel good at school again. It’s heartwarming to have your mom on your team.
When I got on the bus to NHS for the first time in 8th grade, I was nervous, but excited - it was a new school and a new start. NHS was welcoming. I noticed smaller classes made me more confident. Teachers have time to really help you, and advisory gives support or extra help when we need it. It was nice to make new friends - I do homework every day with my friend, Lev.
My school does a GREAT job of giving everyone the support they need. I bet there are lots of other kids who need a school like this.

Now, I understand myself academically. My grades are better, I’ve made new friends, and I actually like coming to school. My favorite subject is math - it’s always been my thing.
I am Bryce and, today, I’m a freshman in my second year at NHS, thinking about becoming a construction manager, and excited about Future Fridays, where professionals come talk to us about jobs. I’m proud of doing good academically and becoming an adult. My teachers and classmates give me the determination to keep going.
Kids deserve people who understand what is different about the ways we learn.
My advice for other students struggling with school is to ask for help - but that only works in a place where people SEE that you are capable!
There are many other kids who need a chance to feel seen and supported. If you can, please make sure they can find their place here, too.
Thank you for supporting students like me,
-Bryce

P.S. Here everybody has their thing, we are all working on something. People notice me and my strengths and help when I need it. Thank you for giving us a place where this is possible!
