Something that truly sets The Norman Howard School apart is our remarkable faculty tenure, and their tremendous expertise.
The average tenure of 13 years among our faculty is rare to find in special education! We are a team that has a collective wealth of knowledge as it relates to teaching nontraditional learners, both inside and outside of the classroom.
This May, we're asking the community to support The Norman Howard School's special program by honoring a special teacher and making a donation in his or her name.
We'd like to celebrate 4 of our outstanding teachers with incredible tenures:
Mrs. Dara Wagner (top left) jokes that her role is the historian for The Norman Howard School! Our exceptional and dedicated reading teacher and Reading Department Chair was appointed in 1985 and says, “the best part of my job is being able to watch the transformation that takes place when students begin to trust in their ability and realize success.”
Hundreds of students have enjoyed high school English class and outdoor education with Mr. Phil Humphreys (top right). He joined our school in 1988 as a brand new teacher. “After all of these years,“ he shares, “the students are still what make this school special.” Mr. Chuck Koffenberger (bottom left) just happened to walk in for a tour in 1988. As soon as he met the staff and students he shares, "I knew I was where I was supposed to be." For more than twenty-eight years as our Social Studies teacher, he has helped countless students discover a love of learning.
Mrs. Sue Vercruysse (bottom right), our 5th and 6th grade classroom teacher, is committed to helping our youngest students connect and feel supported at school. She has been with us since 1989 and has made her life’s work educating and nurturing students in our community.
